Tours & Happenings
The Brighton Cemetorians Inc. aim to run regular walking tours of the Brighton General Cemetery on a range of themes to cater for all interests. Our tours run for approximately 90 mins which includes refreshments and a tour pamphlet. We are also willing to undertake tours for private groups.
Cost of Tours: Non-members: $15, Members: $10. – Cash as we do not have credit card facilities.

Bookings being taken: October 11th – The Thin Blue Line – Police at the Brighton Cemetery
The Victoria Police was formally established on 8 January 1853 from an existing colonial police force of 875 men. Of the large numbers of Irish who joined the Police Force many were Laborers, Miners, Farm workers and even pardoned Convicts. These early policemen worked very hard, especially in country Victoria. They covered wide areas, their wives and children would have to move constantly when their husbands were transferred and often these wives were single parents for long periods of time. Today we will hear just a few stories of those buried within the walls of Brighton General Cemetery. Stories about the Policeman who was found guilty of misconduct by lying about his blossoming weight and the Policeman who rescued many people in the 1890 floods and was recognised with the Valor Award. So come and join us as we look behind the thin blue line and see the private lives of those sworn to serve and protect us.
Walk begins from the front gate on North Rd at 2pm

November 6th – The Commemoration will be held at the Brighton General Cemetery on the paved area outside the Office at 9.30 for a 10am start. Marking Remembrance week, the flags will be flying until the 16th November 2026. This is the tenth in a series of 50 graves to have a flag flying to honour their sacrifice for King and Country. Flags will be flying till the 16th November.
Do you have a few hours to help put flags out on either of the 6th or 7th or balloons on the morning of the 8th?? – please let Lois know.
15th November 2026 – Remembrance Day Walk at 2pm On this walk we will be talking about the largely unknown brave men and women who served their country during various wars. Leading Seaman John Lawrence Baldwin served in Korea, Squadron Leader Keith William Truscott played for the Melbourne Football Club, he shot down eleven German aircraft, probably destroyed another three,and damaged two, Able Seaman James Harold McGowan serving on HMS Trinidad that during convoy PQ 13, the Trinidad’s own malfunctioning torpedo struck her hull, killing 32 men. These are but a few of those that we will be getting to know on this walk. We honour and remember them today.
